Mahnoor Raja

My name is Mahnoor Raja, and I am a 25-year-old student currently pursuing a Masters in Energy, Environment, and Society with a Bachelors in Political Science at the University of Stavanger.
In 2019, I ran for election as Vice President of the Learning Environment in StOr, knowing that I wanted to make a difference in the student community. In this role, it was important for me to ensure transparency in the work that was taking place and to create a space for open communication. I did this by asking questions such as: What is working at UiS? And what can we improve on?
By asking these critical questions, I was able to work on mobilizing policies and systems to facilitate the engagement and collaboration of the student body across programs at the University of Stavanger. Through my role as Vice President, I became familiar with the organizational structure, how to navigate a hectic and challenging environment, and the importance of being able to be a representative for all students across campus.
The most important lesson I attained in this role was the value of fighting for what you believe in and compromising when necessary. These are all values I believe will be of valuable contribution to the students at the University of Stavanger as your female student representative on the University board.
Leadership is not about the next election. It’s about the next generation. Since I was in primary school, I have felt a pull and have been involved in various organizations where I aimed to improve the welfare of the student community. This strong desire led me to be elected as President of the student council in both Middle School and High School at the International School of Stavanger. In these positions, I was able to see opportunities to improve the conditions of the learning environment and be a voice for the concerns of the student body.
Over the years, I have served as the youngest Council Member for four years, held key positions in the youth party, was selected as a summer intern in the People & Leadership department in Equinor, and I recently accepted a fall internship in the Climate, Sustainability and Development department in Det Norske Veritas (DNV). I believe that I have acquired the relevant skills and experience necessary to be elected as the female candidate on the University board.
A greener university: Education has been described as humanity’s best hope and most effective means in the quest to achieve sustainable development. In this context, universities have a special responsibility to help research, define, and exemplify best practice.I believe: that UiS’s research and education must contribute to solving the climate crisis.
A university that builds academic and social relationships between students: All students, regardless of ability, financial situation, ethnicity, gender identity, or other, must feel included at UiS. In this context, I believe: the focus on building relationships should not be restricted to one week, a.k.a “Fadderuka”, but throughout the course of our studies.
A university that can offer internships to all students: Internships are beneficial because they help develop our professional aptitude, strengthen personal character, and provide a greater door to opportunity. I believe: UiS has a responsibility to be a leading institution when it comes to offering students a chance to put what we have learned into practice throughout our studies. In this context, quality must surpass quantity.
I believe the most significant challenge will be to address and develop
solutions to the points I have listed above as “matters of the heart”. On a
personal note, however – my biggest challenge will most definitely be to stick
to one language. I tend to mix between English and Norwegian when
communicating in meetings – but I will try my best to stick to one 🙂
I have been following the development of UiS’ strategy to be an open and
innovative university that demonstrates a high quality of education, research,
and artistic development guided by the responsibility for a sustainable
transition. And I am very interested in contributing to this ambition and other
areas of responsibility throughout the upcoming year. I am confident I will be
able to bring fruitful results that will benefit all students at the University
of Stavanger. Thank you for considering my candidacy!

Klimamålene i verdenen blir kontinuerlig bedre.
