The Student Parliament

The Student Parliament (SP) is the highest chosen organisation for students at UiS. This means that the students in the SP have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the whole student body at the University.

The Sp's tasks are to consider and decide on cases that touch the main lines of StOrs organisation, or are of high importance to the student body at UiS. Some of these main tasks are to decide on the principles of the students and the work-tasks of StOr in student politics cases, budgets on courses for students, freshman week, integration of international students and exhanges for Norwegian students, plan improvements in the offer of public transportation and other such cases. In addition to this, the SP elects student representatives for the university board and other deciding organisations.

The SP consists of 17 student representatives, who again represent lists. One list equals a political party, and everyone on the list have the same basic political views, opinions and goals for their work within the SP.

The SP 2011 consists of three lists: The Moderate list, The Red list and The International list.

The Moderate List – 8 representatives

The Red list – 5 representatives

The International list – 1 representative

In addition, the SP 2011 consist of representatives from the three different faculties at the University. This will no longer be the case ofter 2011.

I wish to join the Student Parliament

Every autumn a new SP is elected. To run for election you have to make a new list or join an existing list. A list should consist of a minimum of three students who share the same student political views and opinions, one of who will function as the contact-person for the rest of the list. The list must be presented to StOr 1 month before the election takes place. It is the students at UiS who elects which lists get to join in the SP, and how many representatives who will be elected from each list.

There are normally 3 - 4 mandatory meetings per semester, and in addition several informal meetings are arranged for dialog and discussions on matters which concerns the SP.

All the SP's chosen representatives have the right to speak, suggest and vote under these meetings. In addition the representatives from the student council and other organs/boards have the right to speak and suggest.

The SP starts on the 1st of January and sits until the 31st of December. There is a thorough training period in the beginning of the spring semester.
